New EIC Pathfinder Project: Integrated Conversion of Nitrate and Carbonate Streams (ICONIC)

Prof. María Escudero Escribano is one of the PIs involved in a new European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Challenges project led by ICFO. ICONIC addresses pollution in water ecosystems caused by agriculture and CO2 emissions by means of electrolysis to remediate pollution while simultaneously producing globally used chemicals. The goal of this EIC project is to design a process to transform seawater nitrates and carbonates, responsible for biomass growth and ocean acidification, into widely used chemicals such as urea and other valuable feedstocks. At the NanoESC Lab, we focus on characterizing the interfaces and nanomaterials with in-situ spectroscopy and microscopy to elucidate reaction mechanisms and improve the catalyst performance.
